The Lowther Estate in Cumbria is leading an ambitious re-wilding and tree-planting initiative, restoring large areas of woodland to enhance biodiversity and sequester carbon. Thousands of native trees have been planted across the estate, helping to reconnect fragmented habitats and create a more resilient landscape.
These efforts support a thriving population of red squirrels, which benefit from the carefully managed woodlands and partnerships with conservation groups working to protect this endangered species.

In addition to tree planting, the estate has reintroduced beavers to help restore wetland ecosystems. By building dams and creating ponds, the beavers naturally manage water flow, reducing the risk of flooding and improving habitat diversity for a range of wildlife.
This combination of afforestation and ecological restoration makes Lowther a leading example of sustainable land management, balancing carbon sequestration with long-term benefits for native species and the wider environment.
